Where to get a watch battery replaced on the cheap?

A friend regifted to me a nice Wenger watchbut unfortunately it has a dead battery. I know the previous owner, and he probably just bought a new watch rather than having a new battery installed. Anyway, Fossil will only change batteries on Fossil watches, Walmart will only replace batteries on watches that they sell, and I’m too cheap to pay $14 at one of those kiosks at the mall. Any suggestions?

I would prefer to do it myself as I fancy myself as being quite handy, but I won’t attempt it without the right tools. I’m not sure how to describe the back, not being familiar with the jargon, so I shall attach an image.

Just get a good screw driver and give one of those notches a tap to the left, then when you screw it back on give it a tap to the right to tighten it up at the end. I had a Wenger once. It wasn’t that hard to get off, don’t need the special tool.

The Sears near me has a watch repair place I generally go to, though I don’t think it’s much cheaper than the $14 at a kiosk..

Local (NOT Chain) Jewelry stores will usually do it. I always had mine done at such a local shop and when my watch died I ended up buying from them.

Depending on how tight it is you can usually use your palm or a flexible jar opener to twist the back off. Otherwise you’ll need a caseback wrench.

get a watch case opener from harbor freight.
